Adventures in Valoria 04 – Opening a Mine

In the first video of the deed that I made, I said that I was probably going to open a mine to south where the pine trees were. I started to make a dirt path from my token towards the trees but as I got closer to the forest I realised that the land was really very flat, and if I tried to open a mine there I would just have to dig a massive hole which I don’t really like.

Looking at the bump map it was hard to tell how high the area was but it was clear that there were some much steeper slopes further west of my deed. So I continued my dirt track that way as you can see below:

I was hoping that it would be quite a sheer cliff face with just a thin dirt layer but unfortunately not; it was more of a gentle hill and the dirt layer turned out to be way thicker than I would have liked so I still had to dig a big hole! But at least it wasn’t on the actual deed. I took some screenshots along the way.

First of all I had to expose some rock, and I wanted to be able to create an even sized cave entrance so I figured I was going to have to surface mine at least one corner so I wanted to expose quite a few tiles. As you can see, it’s not very steep.

I exposed about 9 tiles of rock ready to create a mine entrance

I picked the tile in the center, and surface mined a little to create even 20-slopes on either sized. Another little tweak on this server is that surface mining succeeds every time so it’s MUCH faster and far less annoying than on WO.

Once I had opened the mine, I started to fill back in some of the dirt to kind of even out the sides a little so it didn’t look quite so harsh. I’d had to go back a few tiles with the digging just to get to the rock so this wasn’t particularly effective but it looked a tiny bit neater:

Lastly, I decided to pave (with slabs) the titles surrounding the entrance, and also pave the flattened out area just in front of the mine. At some point I may put some kind of fence at the top of the hill to prevent accidental falls. I already fell in the hole once and got myself a nasty bruise on my foot 🙂

Neatly paved mine entrance. Still a hole in the ground, but a slightly nicer one.

I’ve created a second character which I will use to create a small deed here as I don’t really like having mines off deed and this is way to far to actually extend Scar of Velious.
